Comprehensive Encaustic Painting (Mixed Media) - 3 sections
Encaustic Painting (hot wax, damar resin and pigment) is a unique and addictive process with endless applications and possibilities of expression.
Using torches, irons and other fusing methods encaustic paint is layered and fused to create uniquely depthful, luminous surfaces that can be carved and embellished. Multiple base techniques and specialized tools are covered to give the foundation for understanding the specifics and safety of this medium in all encaustic-based workshops.
More advanced and specialized techniques will focus on expanding your skill sets and refining proficiency meeting you where you are in your learning journey. Advanced techniques may include the use and combination of multiple mixed media, mark making, hand pulled prints, stencils/masking/stamping, collage and the use of photography.
The weekend workshops are a fast-paced and energetic dive into a variety of techniques and concepts from foundational to more complex approaches. The weekly series paces and allows for students to really dive deeper into topics of their choice.

Through the layering of image, word, and personal symbology you will apply a variety of materials and techniques (including encaustic painting, mixed media and collage) to create your unique and reflective figurative representation.
The Embodiment workshop will help you discover and integrate personal symbolism into a meaningful psychological self portrait. Utilizing writing prompts, mindfulness exercises and group discussions we will explore different archetypes, social influences and personal metaphors in order to create a unique visual vocabulary as personal expression.
This workshop also engages established artists ready to explore more personal content and take risks in their practice. Through combining multiple approaches and techniques, you will be guided through developing and articulating your individual narrative symbology into the figure as a form of self expression.
Content derived from this workshop will be a great resource to bring back to your own studio practice for further exploration, development and application.

All current sessions be held in Kelly’s studio in Portland, Oregon with a very limited student roster. We'll review basic techniques for people new to encaustic (prior experience is highly recommended), but our main focus will be individualized content and integrated application over specific techniques so some experience with encaustic painting is highly recommended.
Most supplies provided including -luscious paints and pigment sticks from R&F paints. Bring your own panels, personal imagery and favorite materials/tools to work with. More info will be emailed at registration.
Encaustic painting has beautifully unique properties that sing in larger formats. There are particular issues specific to encaustic that require specific consideration and planning to achieve the full impact with less frustration, cost and pain. I have solved and refined many of my approaches after years of painting in a full range of sizes, subjects and scale (including a 7ft x 7ft piece!)
This workshop is designed for those already comfortable working with encaustic paint who want to elevate their skill level and expand in size. We will be covering the many issues inherent to scaling up and tackle the complications of working large. This workshop will dive deep and will walk you through the multitude of challenges with scaling up to ‘large’ works.

Sunday Studio Time for Returning/Current Students (2022-23)
February 5th & 12th (two person minimum). Cost: Sliding Scale Donation per session
We all could use some time together decompressing, socializing and having fun. This is a NO_INSTRUCTION studio session. Come fling some wax around and practice the skills you have learned in a previous workshop or work on an ongoing unfinished project. Wax will be hot and available, potluck style refreshments and donations to cover materials and studio costs/set-up appreciated.
Supplies Available: Equipment, Tools and Basic Paints (some mixed media). What to Bring: Substrates, Personal Tools/favorite paints or imagery to work on transfers.

Making art is a deep and personal experience that can reflect truths and troubles we may not always have words or understanding around. Learning how to reflect and respond to personal symbology and create a personal narrative can be a powerful healing tool in self-care and self-discovery as we move through current difficult experiences or process old ones.
