This experience is designed for artists ready to deepen their exploration of personal content. While you'll touch on basic encaustic techniques, the main goal is to develop your own narrative and visual style. The workshop offers a blend of hands-on art making and discussions about how other artists use symbolism, enriching your approach to creating meaningful art.
In this workshop you'll dive into writing prompts, mindfulness, and group discussions to explore personal themes and create a unique visual language for self-expression. The focus is on integrating your personal symbolism into art, using materials like encaustic paint, mixed media, and collage to craft either a figurative or abstract portrait that reflects your inner self.
You'll have access to a variety of materials, including quality R&F paints, to bring your ideas to life. Each day ends with a casual happy hour, providing a space to share your work, discuss your journey, and support each other in this personal and creative exploration.
Techniques We Will Explore
Gelli Plate Printmaking: Create custom, hand-pulled prints to serve as expressive base layers and rich collage material.
Sumanigashi: Explore the medative process of sumagashi-a japanese marbling process to create beautiful papers
Working with Japanese Papers: Explore the delicate translucency, strength, and unique properties of Japanese and specialty papers under and between wax layers.
Meaningful Collage: Integrate personally significant ephemera—old letters, writings, book pages, or maps—into your scroll's narrative.
Photo Embedding & Image Transfers: Learn how to embed personal photographic imagery (such as self-portraits, hands, eyes, or sacred places) and create seamless transfers into encaustic.
Hotbox techniques: Learn how to make monotypes and blend all these collage materials into a singular piece.
Encaustic on Paper Substrates: Master the safety and technical aspects of working with encaustic medium and pigment sticks on flexible paper substrates.
Metal Leafing: Embellish your works with preciousness through the use of gold,silver and copper leafing and other sparkle-ness.
Surface treatments& Mark-Making: Use carving, incising, and mixed media to create expressive marks and capture your personal narrative.
Hanging and Finishing: Learn about different ways to finish, hang or display your finished works.
The Somatic & Psychological Journey
Topographical Self-Reporting: Use body mapping and self-reports to trace emotional states and bodily sensations.
Identifying Thoughts & Self-Talk: Capture and reframe internalized narratives and explore messaging and how to flip the negative into healing messaging
Assigning Symbolic Meaning: Learn how to assign symbols, colors, and patterns to represent the intensity and spatial placement of feelings.
Ethos & Messages: Craft a personal messages or life philosophy to place mindfully within your scroll.
This workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced artists comfortable with basic encaustic techniques who want to go beyond technique-focused instruction to explore personal content, take risks, and deepen their studio practice.

Cancellation, Missed Classes and Liability Policies
In-studio workshops require a minimum of 3 registered students.
Cancellation at least 30 days before the class date will receive a full refund minus any processing fees or a full credit for another workshop or art purchase.
If you cancel within 14 days of workshop you will receive a refund or credit, minus a $50 cancellation fee, will be applied ONLY if the space is filled by another paying student.
By registering and/or attending this class in any form (online, email, pay service, cash payment, credit or trade) you agree to assume all responsibility for non-refundable expenses including but not limited to travel and lodging. Travel insurance is encouraged.
If the workshop is canceled by the instructor, you will receive a full refund or credit.
Should any injuries occur during or as a result of participation in any workshop or event, the registered student agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Kelly Williams.
